Currently there are four major banks that pretty much monopolize personal and business banking in the US: Bank of America, Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo. They did not get to be the 'top dogs' because people love and trust them. Banking does not elicit the kind of public loyalty and patronage one might have for a fast food restaurant or a brand of soda.
These four banks are able to dominate US finance though a history of mergers and acquisitions, most of which occurring over the past two decades. And while these expanded their portfolios and profit margins, it also expanded their risks and financial losses of which the on-going non-stop bailouts occur to keep them solvent.
We thought we'd give a brief overview of each bank, focusing on the gobbling up of other lending institutions like Ms Pac Man within the last 20-25 years.
This list may seem long and may at times feel like a dry, stale read but just focus on the bigger picture-- that these 4 banks are as large as they are because essentially they've collectively stomped out the competition, and the process the general public is left with fewer choices:
Bank of America
* Has a retail banking footprint that covers approximately 80 percent of the U.S. population. It serves approximately 57 million consumer and small business relationships at 5,900 banking centers and 18,000 ATMs.
1983 - acquired Seafirst Corporation of Seattle, Washington & Seattle-First National Bank.
1992 - acquired its California rival, Security Pacific Corporation, Security Pacific National Bank in California and other banks in Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington
1994- acquired the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. of Chicago
** These mergers helped BankAmerica Corporation to once again become the largest U.S. bank holding company in terms of deposits, but the company fell to second place in 1997 behind fast-growing NationsBank Corporation, and to third in 1998 behind North Carolina's First Union Corp.
1998 - BankAmerica was acquired by NationsBank of Charlotte, the largest bank acquisition in history at that time. The merged bank took the name 'Bank of America Corporation'
2004 - purchased FleetBoston Financial for $47 billion in cash and stock; all of its banks and branches were given the Bank of America logo. At the time of merger, FleetBoston was the seventh largest bank in United States with $197 billion in assets, over 20 million customers and revenue of $12 billion.
2005 - purchased credit card giant MBNA for $35 billion in cash and stock.
2006 - purchased The United States Trust Company for $3.3 billion, from the Charles Schwab Corporation. US Trust had about $100 billion of assets under management
2007 - acquired LaSalle Bank Corporation from Netherlands's ABN AMRO for $21 billion. With this purchase, Bank of America possessed 1.7 trillion in assets.
2008 - acquired Merrill Lynch & Countrywide Financial. This purchase made Bank of America Corporation the leading mortgage originator and servicer in the U.S., controlling 20–25% of the home loan market. Countrywide Financial has changed its name to Bank of America Home Loans.
Citigroup
* Has the world's largest financial services network, spanning 140 countries with approximately 16,000 offices worldwide; currently employs approximately 260,000 staff around the world. It also holds over 200 million customer accounts in more than 140 countries. It's a primary dealer in US Treasury securities
1998 - Formed following the $140 billion merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group to create the world's largest financial services organization.
2000 - acquired Associates First Capital Corporation, which, until 1989, had been owned by Gulf+Western
2001 - acquired European American Bank and Banamex
JP Morgan Chase
* The largest bank in the United States by assets and market capitalization. It is a major provider of financial services, with assets of $2 trillion and according to Forbes magazine is the world's largest public company based on a composite ranking
2000 - Formed when Chase Manhattan Corporation merged with J.P. Morgan & Co.
2004 - Merged with Chicago based Bank One Corp.
2006 - Purchased Collegiate Funding Services, a portfolio company of private equity firm Lightyear Capital, for $663 million. CFS was used as the foundation for the Chase Student Loans
2008 - Acquired Bear Stearns months before its eventual collapse; Also that year, it acquired Washington Mutual Bank
Wells Fargo
* The fourth largest bank in the U.S. by assets and the largest bank by market capitalization. Wells Fargo is the second largest bank in deposits, home mortgage servicing, and debit cards.
1986 - acquired Crocker National Corporation from Midland Bank.
1988 - acquired Barclays Bank of California from Barclays UK
1996 - acquired First Interstate Bank for $17.3 billion.
1998 - merged with Norwest Corp. of Minneapolis.
2000 - acquired National Bank of Alaska & First Security Corp.
2001 - acquired H.D. Vest Financial Services.
2007 - acquired CIT Construction, Placer Sierra Bank & Greater Bay Bancorp.
2008 - Wells Fargo acquires Wachovia, United Bancorp of Wyoming & Century Bank

We just wanted to give you a taste of the financial incest... Every bank that was gobbled up by the Big Four had done its share of gobbling up themselves in their prime. So in essence, its no different than a pyramid. Bank A is owned by X who is owned by Y, who is owned by Z
And the amazing (not in a good way) part is every western nation has their own "Big Four" completely monopolizing the entire financial market and usurping the consumer's ability to have choices.
The 2008 financial crisis should have forced the US banks figuratively and literally onto their knees; hemorrhaging money and ready to have their collective heads cut off. Instead they're stronger than ever though still financially as weak as ever; nothing more than zombies 100% dependent on the Fed to keep them and the whole decayed system afloat

"Apologies Made to Whoever Pleases"
"Apologies made to whoever pleases; Still they got me like Jesus"

In this constantly shifting, changing world we live in, there are few constants.. that every boss will financially exploit his/her worker... that every family will have at least one truly rotten member.. etc..
You know.. truisms that stand the test of time.
And when it comes to popular culture, one of the most consistent constants is that every week guaranteed, at least three well known people from the world of politics, finance, entertainment or sport will say something they sincerely mean, and then give an insincere public apology for it.
We decided once again to visit Google news and keyword "apologize" to see what if anything we discover for the last 3-4 days.
Why does A&G bother to do this? Simple-- To make two points:
1) Most people especially those in the public eye are deeply insincere and will say/do anything to retain their position
2) People think they're tolerant and accepting of other points of view. They're not. Most are deeply intolerant toward any viewpoints that differ from their own or the majority-accepted norm.
So without further ado, here's a sampling of news stories from around the globe from Fri 4/13 to Tues 4/17 where well known people had to apologize for things they said or done...
"A Southern Baptist leader apologized this week for any hurt caused by explosive remarks accusing President Barack Obama and other black leaders of exploiting Trayvon Martin’s death for political gain." (Washington Post)
~ In this world, you apologize for being truthful...
"Several top GSA (General Services Administration) officials apologized to lawmakers, their colleagues, the president and the American people for failing to head off what became a four-day $820,000 entertainment fest for 300 Western Region employees." (GovExec.com)
~ They should have added, 'We don't regret spending that much. We're just sorry you all found out about it...'
"A New Jersey lawmaker apologized Monday for asking a state police trooper to not issue him a speeding ticket, stressing that he was not trying to use his elected position when he made the unsuccessful request." (lohud.com)
~ Of course the lawmaker was.. what a sad little man...
"(Red Sox manager) Bobby Valentine has had to apologize for comments he made about third baseman Kevin Youkilis' lack of commitment to this season on a Boston TV station" (Boston.com)
~ A manager can not criticize a player without being hung in effigy
"During the Great American Panel segment on last night's 'Hannity' (on Fox News), Political commentator Bob Beckel inadvertently let an expletive fly... Though he initially balked when asked by Sean Hannity to apologize, Beckel quickly relented... Beckel, who expressed a concern that he would be fired over the fleeting fuck, doubled down on his apology by taking to Twitter after the show to pen another mea culpa" (Gawker.com)
~ Pathetic.. bad enough Beckel had to apologize for saying 'Fuck' but it was so clear that doing so was against his principles but did so anyways... anything to keep those paychecks coming
Headline: Axl Rose Apologizes to Cleveland, Says City 'Does in Fact Rock' (Fox8 Cleveland)
~ To give context to the headline: Axl Rose, former front man for 'Guns n Roses' didn't want to attend his band's induction into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame if it meant having to share that honor with his bandmates. So he didn't attend.
"Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen apologized this afternoon for saying Ann Romney "has actually never worked a day in her life" (USA Today)
~ Of course Rosen 100% meant what she said but will not risk losing her job over something as trivial as Principle.
"Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen sat in the heart of Little Havana on Tuesday, seeking forgiveness for what he called the biggest mistake of his life — saying he admired Cuban dictator Fidel Castro." (Chicago Sun Times)
~ Utter Bullshit. The man got suspended five baseball games for giving his opinion! Maybe he was right.. Maybe he was wrong.. Irrelevant. Guillen gets crucified for expressing thoughts. The fear that the Cuban population of South Florida would boycott attending Marlins games was enough for their despicable owner to inflict punishment upon a man hired as their manager only a few months prior.
Very few people have conviction any more.
An apology only has meaning if the one who says it, truly means it, and when that apology is given based or a fear of loss of power, money, freedom or a position of prominence, the words are as meaningless and trivial as the little man or woman who utters it.

Postscript...
On a personal note, we at A&G just recently discovered today that Thomas Kinkade passed away a couple weeks ago, on April 6th at the age of 54. Unfortunately he was battling alcohol for most of his life and after a night of heavy drinking, his life sadly ended.
For many of us here at A&G, we looked fondly upon Kinkaid. He was a wonderful artist, the "Painter of Light" that through his works, both on religious and secular themes, brought cheerfulness and a lot of joy to millions around the world.
So we mention his passing here and remember his artistry fondly...
